What is the [Co]lab?

The [Co]lab is a 3-day immersive workshop designed to help K-8 educators, math coaches, and school leaders shift to a philosophical understanding and pedagogy that is learning-centered and builds deep understanding of math as a discipline. The [Co]lab is our flagship professional learning experience and serves as a starting point for many educators.

What will I learn at the [Co]lab?

Throughout the three days of the [Co]lab, we'll explore the high-leverage concepts of our Generative Framework and understand the ideas that connect arithmetic to algebra. We'll also overview the practices that anchor a Number Lab Math Block, highlight important models that support deep understanding, and learn more about what contributes to positive classroom culture and productive discourse.

Why should my colleagues and I attend the [Co]lab?

The [Co]lab is a disruption of the traditional, narrow practices and norms of K-12 math education. By engaging in this workshop, you will leave with a newfound love and appreciation for math, an understanding of the importance of a conceptual focus that nurtures reasoning, and clarity on how to shift your practices to support a classroom culture conducive to collaboration, discussion, and critical learning skills. The best way to attend the [Co]lab is with colleagues, as this will be a transformative experience for you as a mathematician and as a teacher. You’ll want to share it with peers so you can support one another in shifting to practices in your classrooms that empower children to reason and to engage in argument in a way that honors the thinking of others, while producing a new and deeper understanding of the discipline.

The [Co]lab will provide a unique, collaborative, hands-on experience for you and your colleagues and you’ll want to return each summer.

Watch the video above as some of our past participants describe the value of the [Co]lab.

  • “It was mind-blowing. Had I learned to think mathematically in this way, I would have enjoyed and done well in math. It would have made sense. The Number Lab staff were knowledgeable, helpful, and encouraging.”

  • "I have never experienced such a profound and paradigm-shifting training before. I learned so much personally about teaching and math."

    [Co]lab 2024 Participant

  • “My brain hurts in a good way! I'm so excited about taking what I have learned and applying it in my classroom. My week at The Number Lab was an invaluable experience.”

    [Co]lab 2018 Participant

  • “I cannot even begin to explain how this has not only changed my own thinking about math, but how I teach it to my students. I'm almost embarrassed to think back to my 'normal' math instruction. But I am excited for the future. Also, on a side note, I once again fell in love with math.”

    [Co]lab 2021 Participant

  • “Enlightening and informative! Stretched my thinking to view the discipline of math differently than I have been trained.”

    [Co]lab 2025 Participant

  • “I now understand the 'why' behind thinking mathematically and more importantly, thinking conceptually rather than procedurally."

    [Co]lab 2021 Participant

  • “I have thoroughly enjoyed learning a powerful, empowering way of being and communicating for and with my students that will allow me to more greatly serve them as mathematicians. It has been a joy, and I wish we were doing another week next week.”

    [Col[lab 2024 Participant

  • "It’s like I missed out on so much conceptual learning as a child. And I got here and I was able to be a child again and feel like my thoughts, my discourse, mattered to the whole community. And I wasn’t afraid to be vulnerable."

    [Co]lab 2025 Participant

  • "100% nothing short of life-changing. Prior to experiencing [Co]lab, I felt incapable of ever feeling competent in math, and now, I feel confident, capable, & much more comfortable."

    [Co]lab 2024 Participant

  • "I am really amazed by the way in which early math is being taught! I am a mathematician by trade; I can’t imagine how much richer my education path would have been if I would have learned this way since the beginning."
