Austin [Co]lab 2024

This 3-day workshop is designed to place emphasis on the impact of assumptions in shaping a culture of learning. Participants will reflect on how their assumptions relate to the micro-culture within their classroom and support the practices that are employed for specific kinds of learning experiences. Participants will also discuss the assumptions that are at the core of The Number Lab Math Block framework, while carefully considering the research and theories that support these assumptions. After unpacking and discussing aspects of theory that drive the Math Block pedagogy, participants will be immersed in several Math Blocks. Through the Math Block’s elements - Concept Studies, Thought Exercises, and Studio - participants will take a deep dive into math content. Having had multiple experiences traversing mathematics terrain with a conceptual focus and as part of a learning community, participants will analyze the mathematics learning experience that was made possible by the learning culture.

Who should participate?

The [Co]lab is targeted at math teachers, coaches, specialists, and school leaders that are interested in meaningful change. The math content that we focus on in the [Co]lab falls in the range of 2nd through Algebra.

We also welcome participants of grade levels above and below the range of 2nd through Algebra, as we have on many occasions had teacher who teach above Algebra 1 or below 2nd grade find the content and pedagogy can be transferred to their teaching situations.

The Number Lab’s professional development is unlike any other PD I have attended. You don’t just leave with extra activity ideas, you leave with a transformed way of thinking about math. I highly recommend The Number Lab for any teachers who are interested in expanding the ways in which they think and talk about math conceptually with colleagues, but even more importantly with their students.
