As the name implies, a Thought Exercise is meant to develop the thinking that is crucial to the full development of mathematicians. To truly access the conceptual terrain we put before our mathematicians, we also have to simultaneously work on developing their thinking skills—both generally and with specific regard to mathematics. Thus, these are exercises in thought and require the teacher to deliver them such that the experience induces students to grow more sophisticated ways of thinking.
The 100 Chart Field Guide is meant to feel very casual and practical. Sample prompts are provided, but the highlight is the way the guide drops you into a school culture and math class that offers a very different experience than teachers and students often encounter.
