Foundational Numeracy Resource
This resource is designed to support you in building powerful foundational numeracy experiences for learners at a crucial stage in their development. The Foundational Numeracy Resource is a collection of Concept Studies that provides the structure for building deep understanding of number. Each section builds on the foundational understandings established in Section 1: Reasoning Within 5. This is followed by Ten Is Your Friend, Reasoning Within 20, and Working Within 100.
The 50+ page resource is meant to be a sampling of Concept Studies, and also meant to give you an idea how we use Community Conversations and Studio to support the work of our mathematicians. The Concept Studies are designed to engage students in conversations around important “Big Ideas;” these Big Ideas and their tightly interconnected Nested Ideas support young mathematicians in developing a strong foundation in number reasoning. Concept Studies are not designed to follow the narrow structure of a typical “math lesson.” Instead, they are purposeful discussions, crafted to press students to think about number as a count and to notice, reason, and explain. The Concept Studies are also an invitation for you to refine your teaching craft—notes in the margins support you in shifting from delivering information to following students' thinking. Your students will likely need more Concept Studies than what we have provided. Once you understand the structure and questions, we encourage you to create similar discussions for each of the aims.
Most Concept Studies utilize a Rekenrek and whiteboard.
We encourage you to download and print this rich resource, and use the material to support children in an early stage of development (4-7 year olds) or older children lacking a strong foundation in number reasoning.
